Got Cancer? There’s a Card for That.

Today I went to CVS to pick up a variety of greeting cards. While searching for just the right birthday and encouragement messages, I came across a display called “Messages of Encouragement” for people fighting cancer. Yup! Cancer has become so common that it has its own category of cards. I believe a portion of sales supports the American Cancer Society.

I had to stop and think about it. 1 out of 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer, and some stats say 1 out of 2. Thanks to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments, more people are surviving it and/or living longer with it. At first a part of me objected to the marketing aspect of cards for cancer. But wasn’t I just searching for cards for people I know, with cancer, in the fight for their lives? And all to too often people are at a loss for what to say. I ended up getting the ‘Your a Fighter” card. I hope in the not too distant future I can return and buy one that says “Cancer Free.”
