Advanced prostate cancer patient Marc was stunned after receiving a cancer diagnosis after a mysterious rash appeared. Watch as he shares his prostate cancer story from diagnosis through treatment–and his experience before joining a clinical trial and support he received. In Marc’s words, “As a Black man, I’m proud I took part in clinical research to add to the diversity clinical trial sponsors are seeking to develop new, effective therapies for all patients. And Marc is thankful for the clinical trial financial assistance he received from Lazarex Cancer Foundation, “It was a major relief–one less strain I needed to worry about.”

Transcript:

After my doctor ran a routine PSA test, they found high levels along with stage IV advanced prostate cancer. The cancer had spread to my lymph glands and to my hip. I had no health insurance whatsoever, and finances were an issue all along. Then a few years into my battle, my doctors suggested a clinical trial. I realized then I had to be my own best advocate. They couldn’t tell me how many people of my race and gender participated, because no one else was in my category. This fact concerned me. Cancer impacts all of us differently, and having a reference point was important to me. After switching to a second clinical trial, travel increased for my scans, bloodwork, and other visits. With my huge travel costs, someone on my oncology team referred me to Lazarex Cancer Foundation. I was able to get reimbursed for the travel back and forth from my clinical trial. I’m thankful to Lazarex for their help that allowed me to stay on the trial as long as my body could handle it.

As a Black man, I’m proud I took part in clinical research to add to the diversity clinical trial sponsors are seeking to develop new, effective therapies for all patients.
