I’m Jackie Hinckley. I’m 74 years old and my journey with cancer started in 2006. Today I’m living with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer.
I was given 20 months to live, a grim diagnosis for sure. But that was 4 years ago. Today, the advanced treatment I am receiving in my clinical trial is saving my life… and the help I’m receiving from Lazarex allows me to stay in the clinical trial.
Hago esto, mientras no me siento lo mejor posible... También no puedo pagar el costo de la vivienda, el billete de avión, uber. Todos los meses. Soy frugal, así que hago todo lo posible para mantener los gastos al mínimo; cojo el ojo rojo, me alojo en una vivienda subvencionada en el MGH y encuentro la forma menos costosa de comer.... Pero aun así, estos gastos se acumulan y están muy por encima de mis posibilidades.
He participado en 4 ensayos clínicos diferentes. Es un verdadero milagro que siga aquí... y estoy más que agradecida por este tiempo con mis hijas y mis nietos. Aquí está el truco: para conseguir ese tratamiento y poder seguir en esta tierra, debo viajar. Muy lejos. Vivo en Monterey, California, y el ensayo está en el Massachusetts General de Boston. Una vez al mes cojo un Uber hasta la estación de autobuses, un viaje de dos horas y media en autobús hasta San Francisco y el ojo rojo hasta Boston.
En esta batalla por mi vida, he agotado mis ahorros. Sencillamente, no puedo permitirme los gastos de viaje, y no, no estoy recibiendo ninguna ayuda económica de la empresa farmacéutica para la que estoy ofreciendo voluntariamente mi cuerpo para su investigación; ni en este ensayo ni en ninguno de los otros en los que he participado. No me malinterpreten, estoy agradecida por la oportunidad de recibir el tratamiento avanzado, por eso estoy hoy ante ustedes. Sin embargo, me desconcierta que casi tenga que abandonar este ensayo porque no puedo permitirme el viaje.
Ahí es donde entra en juego la Fundación contra el Cáncer Lazarex. Me reembolsan los gastos de viaje a mi ensayo clínico y me permiten seguir recibiendo este tratamiento que me está salvando la vida. Me permiten participar en un estudio que podría beneficiar a otros pacientes como yo. No me cabe duda de que no estaría ante ustedes si no fuera por la ayuda económica de Lazarex. Esto es una cuestión de vida o muerte, no sólo para mí... sino para miles de pacientes con cáncer... muchos de los cuales nunca tendrán la oportunidad porque no se les dan opciones.
I am here in DC to participate in the Lazarex roundtable (Disrupting the System II), then on my way to Boston for my next treatment…but it was important to me to stopover… to take part in this important event. I want to use my voice to spread the message about how patient reimbursements and engagement is key. A key to hope. a key to life. I cherish every moment with my grandkids and my daughters. And I get that opportunity because the help from Lazarex allows me to continue receiving treatment in my clinical trial.

“Yesterday we learned that Jackie Hinckley passed away. I will say she gave it her all and got many years to be with her family and grandkids. Heaven gains a feisty and beautiful soul. We were lucky to have her here while we did. What I keep learning is it is not that we die, but how we live knowing that we die. And how we live and how we face our death is the legacy we leave behind. So, blessings to who all who we love who have gone before us! You were comets, meteors, auroras across the open sky of our lives. Mission complete! We’ll take it from here and feel your love from the realms of the ancestors. Welcome home.”
